What exactly is in it?

Biltong is essentially pure grass-fed beef, slowly air-dried to preserve its natural nutritional value and flavour. Beef is naturally rich in high-quality protein (all essential amino acids) and also contains important micronutrients including iron, zinc, phosphorus, and selenium.

It also naturally provides substances such as creatine, carnitine and taurine – components that are common in animal foods and fit into an ancestral lifestyle.

For our biltong, the meat is traditionally marinated with salt and vinegar, and seasoned with classic spices like black pepper and coriander. Drying removes most of the moisture, resulting in a concentrated meat snack: pure, savoury, and practical, without unnecessary additives.

The History of Biltong

Biltong originated in South Africa and dates back to the 17th century, when Dutch colonists sought ways to preserve meat. They used vinegar, salt, and spices to preserve the meat, after which it was slowly air-dried, a technique still used today.

This method proved ideal for long-distance travel without access to fresh food. Biltong thus became the go-to protein snack for farmers, hunters, and soldiers. Unlike jerky, which is usually heated and sweetened, biltong remains raw and pure, retaining its texture and nutritional value.
