Nose-to-tail eating matches our biological needs

We are often unaware that meeting our nutritional needs is quite a struggle these days – precisely because many nutrient-rich natural sources, such as organs, are no longer eaten.

Nose-to-tail eating is an essential part of human history. From the Paleolithic era until not so long ago, our ancestors always ate the whole animal, from head to tail. Indigenous peoples also ate organs to stay healthy and strong and to survive in harsh climates. Absolutely no parts were wasted, precisely because organs and other parts contain essential nutrients. This was part of an intuitive knowledge that has largely been lost today.

Until recently, nose-to-tail eating seemed a thing of the past, but fortunately it is enjoying a renaissance. In the modern world, meeting our nutritional needs takes effort – sometimes without us realising it – because we no longer eat natural, wholesome foods such as organs. Many of us have forgotten that our ancient biology craves these powerful food sources to reach our optimum and lead a dynamic life. These foods connect us with our physical, spiritual and psychological heritage.

Since the emergence of modern humans, we have largely lived a hunter-gatherer lifestyle. We evolved on the basis of a number of key factors that shaped our health and vitality: eating wild, seasonal and nose-to-tail. Exposure to the natural elements and the rhythms of nature, combined with plenty of physical activity. Darkness at night and sunlight on our skin and eyes during the day. Together, these elements make for a proven, successful way of life that promotes robustness and health in many ways.

Reasons to eat beef liver

Beef liver is not only tasty, it is also packed with nutrients. It is a great source of B vitamins, such as vitamin B12, riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), folate (B9), vitamin B6 and thiamine (B1). Just 100 grams of beef liver contains all of these important vitamins!

Besides B vitamins, beef liver is also an incredible source of heme iron. Iron contributes to normal formation of red blood cells and haemoglobin, the protein that carries oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body, and to normal oxygen transport in the body.

When it comes to the nutritional value of liver, B vitamins and iron often tend to get all the attention. However, liver contains a large number of other vitamins and minerals, such as:

  • Selenium: contributes to normal thyroid function
  • Vitamin C: rare in animal foods, but present in liver
  • Phosphorus: beef liver contains 50% of the recommended daily amount of phosphorus, which contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism
  • Choline: liver is one of the richest sources of choline

Mineral earth and beef blood: the real thing

Because we wanted to develop a food supplement that comes close to real primal food, we added our own Paleo Elements Complex™. This addition consists of a little raw beef blood from New Zealand and European paleosoil. It gives you complementary nutrients on top of the already nutritious liver – not in extreme amounts, but just enough to complement and enrich the liver, exactly as in a real primal scenario! The Paleo Elements Complex™ provides, among other things, extra minerals and trace elements, as well as red and white blood cells and immunoproteins.

Blood as an extra source of bioactive nutrients

Animal blood has always been an important source of nutrients for humans, especially in prehistoric times. You still see examples of this today. Take modern hunter-gatherers such as the Maasai and Bodi tribes of Africa and the Inuit of the Arctic and Subarctic regions: blood from the cattle they herd and from wild animals is a valued part of their diet.

Blood is a source of heme iron, vitamin B12, vitamin A, vitamin D3 sulfate, vitamin K2, folate, CoQ10 and choline, along with other blood components such as red and white blood cells, platelets, immunoglobulins, peptides, cofactors and enzymes. These are all present in our freeze-dried beef blood powder as well. Origin and quality are of course important, which is why we only use blood from New Zealand pasture-raised cows.

Paleo Elements Complex™: the finishing touch

Eating earth for medicinal and wellbeing purposes is as old as humanity itself. Edible earth has traditionally been used for nutritional and therapeutic purposes. Geophagy, the deliberate eating of earth, has been documented in all parts of the world since ancient times. On the other hand, unintentionally eating earth was an unavoidable part of daily life in paleolithic times. In varying small amounts, earth was consumed via fresh plant foods, hunted animals, and hands and tools.

Unintentionally consuming earth provided nutritional advantages and useful microorganisms. However, there were also risks of exposure to pathogenic microorganisms. With our mineral-rich paleosoil addition, we focus selectively on the complementary nutritional aspects, not on therapeutic or probiotic reasons for use. Paleosoil is 100% natural and clean and comes from aeolian sediment from the European Ice Age.

Mineral soil full of minerals and trace elements

Our paleosoil contains a unique, natural composition of soil minerals and trace elements that were once unavoidable in our daily lives. It contains just enough minerals and trace elements to make a difference and be a meaningful addition to our total daily nutrient intake. The perfect natural mix of minerals and trace elements found in our paleosoil includes silicon, calcium, potassium, magnesium, sodium, phosphorus, copper, manganese, nickel and zinc.

Organ meat: more nutritious than muscle meat

Organ meat is extremely nutritious! It contains between 10 and 100 times more nutrients than muscle meat. It is also important to consume animal products from organic farms or from pasture-raised cows kept without hormones, antibiotics and commercial feed, because pasture-raised cows contain more nutrients than animals from factory farming.

The liver, for example, is one of those organs that is packed with nutrients. Did you know that the liver is involved in detoxification? Many people think the liver stores toxins, but that is not true. A healthy cow with a healthy liver effectively neutralises toxins and lets them pass through the liver. The liver does, however, store nutrients such as vitamins and minerals.

When you eat 100 grams of beef liver, you get a hefty dose of nutrients, including:

Calcium - 11.0 mg

Phosphorus - 476.0 mg

Magnesium - 18.0 mg

Potassium - 380.0 mg

Iron - 8.8 mg

Zinc - 4.0 mg

Copper - 12.0 mg

Vitamin A - 53,400 IU

Vitamin D - 19 IU

Vitamin E - 0.63 mg

Vitamin C - 27.0 mg

Vitamin B1 - 0.26 mg

Vitamin B2 - 4.19 mg

Vitamin B3 - 16.5 mg

Vitamin B5 - 8.8 mg

Vitamin B6 - 0.73 mg

Folate (B9) - 145.0 mcg

Biotin (B8) - 96.0 mcg

Vitamin B12 - 111.3 mcg

Carefully chosen organ meat = supplements of the highest quality

At Paleo Powders we are passionate about bringing the very best quality organ supplements to the market! Our carefully selected freeze-dried organ powders come from grass-fed cattle from New Zealand and Europe – we never use raw materials from animals from countries with intensive livestock farming and frequent use of antibiotics.

The animals are kept with care and respect for animal and environment. They live in their natural habitat, spend most of their time outdoors, and are properly cared for and monitored. This is reflected in the quality of the meat and of our organ supplements. Moreover, because our ingredients are freeze-dried raw, nutrients such as vitamins, minerals and cofactors are preserved in the highest possible concentrations.

Our supplements are formulated with the utmost care and extensively tested. The products contain no pesticides, hormones or fillers. In short, we are dedicated to providing the best-quality supplements for your health and wellbeing.
